Reading of Jeremiah

Sunday, September 19, 2010

Beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary

Jeremiah, the faithful prophet

The definition of success includes references to achieving goals and acquiring wealth, prestige, favor and power. Successful people enjoy the good life - they are leaders, opinion makers, and trend-setters. By these standards, Jeremiah was a miserable failure. For 40 years he served as God's spoke person to Judah, but when he spoke, nobody listened. Consistently and passionately he urged them to act, but nobody moved. He was poor and often endured great hardships to deliver his prophecies. In God's eyes, Jeremiah was one of the most successful people in all history. Success as measured by God involves obedience and faithfulness regardless of opposition and personal cost. Jeremiah was obedient to his calling; he faithfully and courageously proclaimed the word of God.
As you read Jeremiah, feel with him as he agonizes over he message he must deliver, pray with him for those who refuse to respond to the truth, and watch his example of faith and courage. Then commit yourself to be successful in God's eyes.

Scripture Aloud is a monthly gathering at which an entire book of the Bible is read aloud.  These readings are held on the third Sunday of the month in the Sanctuary and begin at 1:00 p.m.  The length of the reading depends on the length of the selected book.  There are no sign-up sheets and no schedules.  There are no designated readers.  Those assembled will share in the reading as each feels led.  You choose whether or not you read, when you read, and how much you read.  You do not have to read aloud at all, but may choose to simply listen to the Word of God.  Just come as you are - for as long or as short of time as you can stay.  There is no prescribed agenda other than to begin at verse one of chapter one and continue reading, one after the other, until the entire book is read.  Come to the reading confident that the Lord knows exactly what you need to hear and will speak to you in love through the words in the selected book for that month.  You will be blessed.
Future Readings
1 Kings (the ministry of Elijah) October 17
Zechariah (prophecies regarding the coming Messiah) November 21
Matthew (the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ) December 19
